Why the Church of Christ is called the Roman and Catholic Church?
Answer: The church of Christ or the church of God is not an organizational name of the Church, this is only a DESCRIPTIVE TERM of the Church. While the Holy, Catholic, Apostolic and Roman Church is not the official name of the Church, this is only a DEFINITION of the Church. The official and the organizational name of the Church of Christ is a Roman and Catholic Church.
Q: Why Roman Catholic? Does the Scripture support it?
Answer: Yes! “To all the PEOPLE AT ROME who called by God to be His saints, I thank God through Jesus Christ, for all of you BECAUSE YOUR FAITH HAS PROCLAIMED TO THE WHOLE WORLD.”( Rome 1:7-8). The people or the citizens of Rome are called Romans and the Roman faith has been chosen by God to proclaim to the WHOLE WORLD( which means CATHOLIC/ UNIVERSAL). This is where the Roman and Catholic faith emanated from.
Q: WHY THE NAME OF THE CHURCH IS CATHOLIC CHURCH? DOES THE SCRIPTURE SUPPORT IT?
Answer: Yes! We all knew that God did not give a certain name when He had built His church in Jerusalem in 33 AD (Matthew 16:16) but He commanded to “Catholicize” the whole world. “Going therefore, teach ye ALL NATIONS; baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and lo, I Am with you all days, even to the consummation of the world” (Matthew 28:9,16-20). ALL NATIONS which means Catholic/ Universal/ According to the Whole. And Catholic Church alone baptizing the people in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit as the Lord commanded.
Q: IF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH WAS REALLY BUILT BY JESUS CHRIST IN JERUSALEM THEN WHY IT PERMANENTLY HEADQUARTERS AT ROME AND NOT IN JERUSALEM?
Answer: The Lord Himself commanded His Apostles (most notably St. Peter and St. Paul) to reestablish the Christian Church from Jerusalem to Rome( Please see ACTS 23:11) “Take courage! You have testified about me in Jerusalem, and you have to testify also about me in Rome”.
This is also a fulfillment of the Lord’s promise to protect His church forever, hence at the time, Jerusalem was ravaged and destroyed during the Titus’s invasion around 70 AD. The temple of God was completely vanished, if the church have to stay in Jerusalem, it would precisely lay in ruins as well along with the city. And God never allowed that. God had chosen Rome because the Roman Empire was so vast and was no doubt the most extensive Empire in the ancient world, the territory stretched out from the rest of Continental Europe, to the entire Middle East and some parts of Africa and it was approximately composed of 45-50 nations. Thus if the whole Empire will be baptized then “All Nations” will triumphantly be baptized as well. Amidst of severe and relentless persecutions within 399 years, the Apostles have succeeded to accomplish their missions by baptizing much of the Roman Empire even if at the expense of their own lives.
They have suffered and faced martyrdom, and now they were venerated as the most respected and most renowned Saints of the Catholic Church. Remember, the followers of Christ were called Christians in ANTIOCH in 44AD and the Church of Christ was called Catholic Church in ANTIOCH in 107AD. Is this coincidence? No of course, it is God’s will. Therefore in conclusion, the Apostles and the Early Christians alike were Catholics. AMEN…
